Our son Asher Isaac Green Rose (also known as
“Sprog”) was born on July 25 1999 at 2:11am.
He weighed in at 7lb, 10oz and is 20" long.
Asher was born at Alta
Bates Hospital by Caesarean section. Miriam did well quickly and lost
all her extra weight. She had the advantage of having both a husband and a
birthing coach or "Doula"
Patty Lipinska throughout a very arduous labor, which took 15 hours. The
first part of it went very well; we got to go
outside. The second part was tougher, though Miriam kept her
spirits high. Miriam's first sight of Asher was in the recovery
room where she
got to hold him. Later we moved
to a private room where nursing began; we were in the hospital
until Wednesday July 28 where Asher got to sleep swaddled in a Crib.
Then we went home
(and didn’t answer the phone). Asher sometimes slept
with us and was a vigorous sucker. Here's what he looked
like at T-6 months. Good progress, no?
Asher is a biblical name meaning fortunate and happy.
Asher was one of the sons of Jacob (who sold his brother Joseph into
slavery) and started one of the twelve tribes of Israel.
Asher will be the fourth generation of male A. Roses. Isaac is the name of
his late great-grandfather.
Asher had a very sweet poem written
for him by Dennis Fritzinger.
Asher's bris took place at our home on Sunday August 1 1999
at 10:00am.
Here are some links
concerning the bris
ceremony.
Asher is a Berkeley
baby; he is seen
here with his mother in matching tie-dye made by Heather Feenstra. Here’s our first family portrait. He has already met
his future baby-sitters.
Asher likes the great outdoors and has already
experienced the High Sierras at Yosemite
Park,
where he got to sleep in a sleeping bag while turning six weeks of
age. He got to go on a long hike from White
Wolf to the Grand
Canyon of the Tuolumne and Harden Lake,
see Half Dome
from Olmstead Point and go to the beach at Tenaya
lake. He goes for a weekly
hike with us somewhere
in the Bay area. He spent his
first Christmas at Sea Ranch where he got to hike along bluffs and beaches with his parents
(well, in a back-pack).
Asher is a fine traveler and has been to Florida
to see his great
grandmother and 2 other intervening generations. His first overseas trip was to Brussels,
where he got to experience many restaurants, visit a (somewhat boring) museum, see the Petit Sablon
and also the Grand
Place. He has also joined his father at Université Libre
de Bruxelles and experienced a seminar at the European
Commission (well, the first 35 minutes). He has also been to Mexico City.
Asher is very happy, particularly after (though not
during!) inoculations. Part of
the reason is that he spends much time working with his
dad at home. He contemplates plausible
instrumental variables and is delighted when they solve a
tricky censored regression problem together. His assistance in writing “One Money,
One Market” was invaluable (he is thanked in the introductory
footnote).
Asher is sometimes a chili pepper, and
sometimes visits
his god-mother in disguise. He
also deigns to visit the weekly scrapbook
night with
Mom and the chicks (he’s the only human male allowed) and finds it
about as interesting as most men would.
Asher has given audible feedback on currency unions
and a particular
JIE file; he has an especially strong view on a
certain Haas administrator . A Zipped
collection of his sounds (suitable for replacing standard Windows sounds)
is available.
Asher can sometimes be terrifyingly cute
(at least to his parents). He has
posed on his Thos.
Moser chair, on a sheepskin,
and with the sultry
look.
