The East Asian Seminar in Economics:

A Brief Introduction and Expectations

The East Asian Seminar in Economics is a conventional academic conference, typically held in mid-late June somewhere on the Pacific Rim. The conference theme and venue rotates each year. Around ten to twelve academic papers are presented at the conference; each paper is discussed by two discussants and conference participants. In the past, the papers and discussions have been published in a University of Chicago press conference volume after appropriate refereeing by both the NBER and UC press.  Beginning in 2010, EASE proceedings will be posted on the NBER's website, and articles may be submitted to an academic journal for publication.

We have conventional expectations for EASE participants:

• Authors should have reasonable drafts of papers available for circulation a month ahead of the conference, except in the case of unforeseen and exceptional emergencies. We also expect authors to provide revisions of their papers in a timely fashion (a month or two after both the conference and refereeing), along with a brief list of major revisions.
• Discussants should provide their written comments in a timely fashion, shortly after the conference; we also expect any revisions of these comments to be provided in a timely fashion. 
• All conference participants should attend for the entire duration of the conference, and provide constructive suggestions and criticisms as appropriate.
