The following is a basic guide to various conferences that PhD students in the Marketing group may be interested in attending. Starting in their 3rd year, students will find that presenting their research at conferences is a good way to gain experience with presenting their work, build their professional networks, and gain a more in-depth understanding about how marketing academia works at all levels.

Funding

Unless otherwise indicated, all travel expenses as well as a registration fee are the responsibility of the student (i.e. not covered by the conference). However, various options exist for students to receive funding, including:

  • Funding from the PhD program. In 2007-08, all Haas PhD students are entitled to an annual travel budget of $650 (subject to change in future years).
    • For further info: Watch your email for procedural details and contact Kim with questions.
  • Funding from the Marketing group.
    • For further info: Contact the group’s academic advisor.
  • Funding from the Berkeley Graduate Division. All Berkeley graduate students who have advanced to candidacy are entitled to a one-time award of up to $500.

Always pursue PhD program funding as the first option: this budget (unlike the Marketing group’s research funds) is specifically earmarked for travel and does not carry over from year to year.

For funding from the Marketing group, the group’s academic advisor should be the first point of contact. As the Marketing Science and ACR conferences are the most important conferences for quant and behavioral students, respectively, the group will give priority to students who have papers accepted for these conferences.

Major conferences for quant students

Marketing Science conference

  • When: June (annual)
  • Where: Location varies. Held internationally every 3 years.
  • Most recent location: Singapore (Lee Kong Chian School of Business), June 2007.
  • Paper acceptance: Not competitive.
  • Attended by: Faculty and students (separate doctoral consortium included)
  • Notes: This is the main conference for quantitative marketing academics. The group generally recommends that students only attend when they are ready, ideally right before going to the job market. Paper acceptance is not competitive due to a large number of presentation slots, but feedback can be highly critical depending on who attends a presentation.

SICS (Summer Institute in Competitive Strategy)

  • When: July (annual)
  • Where: Haas.
  • Paper acceptance: Competitive.
  • Attended by: Faculty and students.
  • Notes: This is the only major conference held at Haas. It is free (and of course, easy) for Haas students to attend.
  • For more information: http://groups.haas.berkeley.edu/marketing/sics/ (Conference website)

QME (Quantitative Management & Economics) conference

  • When: October (annual)
  • Where: Location varies.
  • Most recent location: Chicago (U of Chicago GSB), October 2007
  • Paper acceptance: Competitive.
  • Attended by: Faculty and students.
  • Notes: This is a very quantitatively-oriented conference.
  • Funding notes: According to the 2007 conference website, “for participants who cannot cover travel costs, limited funds will be available.” The registration fee of $200 is waived for students with a recommendation letter from faculty.

Major conferences (primarily for CB students)

ACR (Association for Consumer Research) conference

  • When: September/October (annual)
  • Where: Location varies.
  • Most recent location: Memphis, October 2007
  • Paper acceptance: Competitive.
  • Attended by: Faculty and students (separate doctoral consortium included)
  • Notes: This entry refers to the North American ACR conference, which is the premier conference for marketing CB academics. ACR also sponsors various smaller, regional conferences: details are on the ACR website.
  • For more information: http://www.acrwebsite.org/  (organization site)

SCP (Society for Consumer Psychology) conference

  • When: February (annual)
  • Where: Location varies.
  • Most recent location: New Orleans, February 2008
  • Paper acceptance: Competitive.
  • Attended by: Faculty and students
  • Notes: This conference is similar to ACR but smaller. “In order to encourage a diverse set of ideas and approaches to consumer psychology, the topic areas are not limited by a particular theme or application.”

Major conferences (for both quant/CB students)

AMA Marketing Educators Summer and Winter meetings

  • When: August and February (semi-annual)
  • Where: Location varies.
  • Most recent location: Washington DC, August 2007.
  • Attended by: Faculty and students
  • Notes: This is mainly of interest because of the job market interviews that take place at the summer conference. However, papers can be submitted as well.

AMA Sheth Doctoral Consortium

  • Notes: Haas nominates and funds one student to attend every year.

University of Houston Doctoral Symposium

  • When: April (annual)
  • Where: Houston (U. of HoustonBauer College of Business)
  • Attended by: Faculty and students (presentations by students only)
  • Notes: In recent years, Haas has nominated one or two students (typically 3rd-year students) to attend this conference, which includes students from schools in TX as well as Haas, UCLA, USC, Arizona and ASU. Presentations include both CB and quant papers.

  • Paper acceptance: Not competitive.
  • Attended by: Students only. (Note that unlike all other conferences on this list, this is for students from all business school academic areas, although marketing students present to each other only)
  • Notes: This conference has been well-attended by Haas students in general, but not from the marketing group. It is attended by PhD students from the top 10 U.S. business schools, LBS, and INSEAD and may be especially useful for students considering the European job market.
  • Funding notes: There is no conference fee and lodging is provided by LBS at a nearby hotel.
  • For more information: http://www.london.edu/phd/transatlanticconference.html (conference website)

Other regional conferences

  • In addition to those conferences listed here, there exist several smaller events sponsored by schools in the immediate vicinity (example: the Berkeley-Davis-Santa Clara symposium held at Haas in May 2007). Announcements will typically be sent to the group by e-mail for these.
