Currently a researcher and instructor at the Haas School of Business, University of California at Berkeley, Justin Tumlinson studies the economics of teams, their formation, the incentives of their members and teamwork's impact on public and private welfare.  Although primarily an applied theorist, he also examines questions empirically.  His dissertation, supervised by John Morgan of the Haas School of Business and the Department of Economics, addresses (i) Discrimination in Teams, (ii) Corporate Social Responsibility, (iii) Ethnicity in Business Decisions.  His approach using the tools of quantitative economics to unpack the firm into individually incented actors participating in teams is unique. More broadly, Tumlinson enjoys applying formal analytics to controversial topics typically associated with softer debate. He will serve as a full time researcher at CESifo (affiliated with the University of Munich) beginning in September 2011.

Tumlinson also serves as Founder and Managing Partner (on leave) of a small firm, ZIVIS LLC, engaged primarily in the advisement of so-called angel investors and management of non-traditional investment assets.  Prior to founding ZIVIS, he analyzed deals and managed portfolio firms for Earlybird, a Munich based, early-stage, venture capital firm.  From 1997 to 2003 he served in a variety of positions at Intel including Sr. Operations Engineer where he advised capital equipment decisions and global manufacturing operations.  He also served as a Researcher in advanced networking technologies where his duties included advising Intel Capital’s investment strategy.

He holds an PhD and MS in Business Administration and an MS in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, all from the University of California, Berkeley, as well as a BSE in Computer Science and Engineering from Northern Arizona University.  He is a German Chancellor’s Scholar and a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.  His other awards include the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Fellowship,  the Fulbright Fellowship, and the Bosch Future Leaders of America Fellowship.
